AndromedusGalacticus@lemm.eeOPMto The Andromedus Galacticus Collection@lemm.ee•AzuraCast - a free and open-source, self-hosted web radio station in a box - [Literally all the tools + GUI included]English1·3 months agoIt entirely depends where you live. You can pay certain organizations for blanket rights to most songs and it’s extremely expensive.
Some options if you still want to broadcast are:
- Use royalty free music/public domain
- Go to Bandcamp/YouTube/Soundcloud and ask smaller artists permission to play their music on your station
- Ask around your local scene and see if artists around your area give you permission to play their music.
- Roll the dice and hope for obscurity to keep you safe
Currently I opted to put everything behind a password and only use it for myself. Once I’m more confident on building solid programming, I might look into starting a station for local and small artists with their permission.

AndromedusGalacticus@lemm.eeOPMto The Andromedus Galacticus Music Collection@lemm.ee•Bootblacks - Hidden Things - [Post-Punk, Darkwave]English1·1 year agoThe method I use for genre tags is:
- Rate Your Music - is by far my most favorite and preferred genre list
- Everynoise - although discontinued, it still has everything I need for Spotify’s genre categorization by typing in an artist
- Last.fm - I don’t really prefer this anymore, but if I don’t have a choice, this isn’t bad.
- Finally, If I can’t find it on any of these, I use my intuition and go looking through the Rate Your Music genres and try to find the most accurate.
Even with everynoise and last.fm, I still match whatever they spit out to rate your music equivalents to make it easier for anyone searching the community. That way everything is consistent and search will bring up every result.
That genuinely makes me so happy to hear. I really appreciate you sticking around for so long too! I hope this acts as a treasure trove for whoever stumbles upon it.
